Overview
The Tokamachi Snow Festival is often called the birthplace of Japan’s snow festivals, first held in 1950 in the heavy-snow city of Tokamachi in southern Niigata. Residents pile the region’s abundant snow into large sculptures and stages, and the highlight is the night-time ‘Snow Carnival’ with performances backed by colourful fireworks over the white landscape. It is a warm, community-run event that welcomes overseas visitors.
When & Where
The festival runs across a mid-February weekend; in 2026 it is held Friday to Sunday, 20–22 February. Snow sculptures and stalls appear across central Tokamachi, with the main stage and the ‘Rainbow Snow Fireworks’ at the principal carnival venue near the city centre, a short walk from Tokamachi Station. Typical hours run from evening on Friday and through the day into the evening on Saturday. Nearest station: Tokamachi Station.
Getting There
Tokamachi is reached from Echigo-Yuzawa Station (on the Joetsu Shinkansen from Tokyo) via the Hokuhoku Line to Tokamachi Station, or from Niigata City by the JR Iiyama and Hokuhoku lines. Trains can be affected by heavy snow, so allow extra time and check schedules. Roads and pavements are packed with snow and ice; sturdy waterproof boots are essential.
What to Expect
Highlights include large-scale snow sculptures created by local teams, a lively main-stage carnival with music and dance, and the signature fireworks that colour the snow. Food stalls serve hot local specialities such as hegisoba noodles and warming sake. Family-friendly snow play areas and slides are set up alongside the art.
Tickets & Access
General admission to the festival streets and sculptures is free. Some reserved or paid seating may be offered for the main carnival stage; check the official site if you want a guaranteed view of the fireworks. Dress for sub-zero temperatures and falling snow.
Tips for Visitors
Come in the late afternoon to see the sculptures in daylight, then stay for the illuminated carnival and fireworks after dark. Bring hand warmers and grippy boots, and book accommodation early, as rooms in town fill quickly during the festival.
