Overview
The Akiha Fire Festival (Akiha no Himatsuri) is a solemn winter rite at Akihasan Hongu Akiha Jinja, the mountain-top head shrine of some 800 Akiha shrines across Japan devoted to the deity of fire prevention. Held each December in the Tenryu district of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, it culminates in three sacred dances — of the bow, the sword and fire — the last performed with a whirling flaming torch to protect the land from actual fires. It is an atmospheric, ritual-focused event rather than a crowd spectacle.
When & Where
The festival is held annually on 15 and 16 December, with the central fire ceremony beginning around 10:00 pm on the 16th at the upper shrine (Kamisha) of Akihasan Hongu Akiha Jinja. The shrine sits high on Mt. Akiha in the mountains north of central Hamamatsu. Because of its remote, elevated setting, plan travel carefully. Nearest access is via the Tenryu/Haruno area of Hamamatsu.
Getting There
Hamamatsu is on the Tokaido Shinkansen, but the shrine is well inland and high on Mt. Akiha, so reaching it usually means a car or a combination of local transport and a mountain drive or hike; the upper shrine is at the summit. Roads can be cold and dark in December, so allow ample time, check local access information in advance, and dress for mountain conditions.
What to Expect
The heart of the festival is the trio of ritual dances: the bow dance (yumi no mai), the sword dance (tsurugi no mai) and the fire dance (hi no mai), in which a priest swings a burning torch through the night air. The mood is reverent and traditional, set against the dark mountain and shrine architecture, with fire as both symbol and centrepiece.
Tickets & Access
Admission is free; the ceremonies are open to worshippers and visitors at the shrine. There is no reserved seating. Come prepared for a late-night event in a cold, remote mountain location, and follow shrine staff guidance around the flames.
Tips for Visitors
Dress in warm, layered clothing and bring a torch for dark paths. Confirm current road and access conditions before setting out, as the mountain location is not served by frequent public transport. The Kamisha summit also rewards daytime visitors with sweeping views toward the Enshu plain.
