Ainokura Winter Light-Up 2027: A World Heritage Village in the Snow
Twenty-odd steep-thatched farmhouses, snow to the eaves, and two nights a year when they are lit from outside.
Overview
Ainokura is one of the three gassho-zukuri settlements inscribed as World Heritage, along with Suganuma in the same Gokayama valley and Ogimachi at Shirakawa-go over the border in Gifu. It is the smallest and quietest of them, still a working village of about twenty houses.
The light-up is held only a handful of nights a year, one set per season. The winter edition, titled “the original Japanese landscape floating on a snowfield”, is the one people travel for.
When and where
The 2026-27 schedule sets the winter light-up for Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February 2027, running from dusk to 20:00. Earlier editions in the same cycle fell in May and September 2026.
There are also madoakari viewing evenings, when the village is not floodlit but stays open until 20:00 with only the house windows lit – 13 and 27 January 2027 in this cycle.
Getting there
From JR Johana Station on the Johana line, a bus takes about 25 minutes to Ainokura-guchi, then it is a three-minute walk. By car, allow about 20 minutes from the Gokayama interchange on the Tokai-Hokuriku expressway. The World Heritage Bus links Takaoka with Gokayama and Shirakawa-go in around 75 minutes.
Winter driving here means snow tyres and patience; the bus is the safer choice.

A small, deliberately low-key event – no stalls, no stage.

Tickets and admission
Free to view, but access is managed: bus and coach parking must be reserved in advance for light-up nights, and village parking is limited. Check the tourism association’s arrangements before travelling.
Tips for visitors
Staying overnight in one of the village minshuku is the way to do this – you get the village to yourself after the day visitors leave. Bring waterproof boots with grip; paths are packed snow and ice. The viewpoint above the village gives the classic wide shot, but it is a climb in the dark, so take a torch.
