Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up 2027: Four Reserved Nights Only
Four nights a year, and only with a reservation: this is the most tightly controlled winter event in Japan, and the reason is that people actually live here.
Overview
Ogimachi in Shirakawa-go is the largest of the World Heritage gassho-zukuri settlements, a valley of steep-thatched farmhouses that gets several metres of snow. The winter light-up floods the village with light against the snowpack, and the 2027 edition is the 41st.
Since 2019 the event has been fully reservation-based, after crowds became unmanageable for a working village of a few hundred people. Turning up on the day without a booking does not work.
When and where
The 2027 light-up nights are Monday 11, Sunday 17, Sunday 24 and Sunday 31 January. The tourism association published the dates on 1 July 2026 and opened reservation details from early September 2026.
On light-up days, visitors without a reservation can only see the village in daylight: coaches must enter by 14:00 and leave by 16:00, and general parking closes in the afternoon.
Getting there
Nohi buses run to Shirakawa-go from Takayama (about 50 minutes), Kanazawa (about 75 minutes) and Toyama. On light-up nights, access is only via a reserved coach, a reserved parking slot, or an overnight stay in the village. Coach reservations are handled through operators in the village, not the standard parking system.

Tickets and admission
Reservation-only with a ticket system, arranged through the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association from around September. Prices and routes vary by access type. Without a ticket you cannot enter during light-up hours, whatever your transport.
Tips for visitors
Decide early: minshuku applications and coach seats both go months ahead. Waterproof boots with grip, a torch and proper winter layers are not optional. If you miss out, the daytime village in snow is still spectacular, and the Ainokura light-up in Toyama in February is a smaller alternative.
