Overview
Niigata Sake no Jin is one of the largest sake events in Japan, gathering breweries from across Niigata — a prefecture famous for clean, dry ‘tanrei-karakuchi’ sake — for a two-day tasting festival at the Toki Messe convention centre in Niigata City. With a single tasting cup, visitors can sample hundreds of sake from dozens of makers, alongside local food and cultural stalls. It is a superb introduction to regional sake for overseas travellers.
When & Where
The 2026 fair runs Saturday and Sunday, 7–8 March, at Toki Messe (Niigata Convention Center). Each day is split into a morning session (roughly 10:00–13:00) and an afternoon session (roughly 14:30–17:30), with tasting beginning shortly after each session opens. The venue sits on the waterfront near central Niigata. Nearest station: Niigata Station.
Getting There
Niigata is about two hours from Tokyo on the Joetsu Shinkansen. From Niigata Station, Toki Messe is about a 20-minute walk or a short bus or taxi ride toward the Bandai-jima waterfront. Because tasting is involved, leave the car behind and use trains and buses; an IC card works on local transport.
What to Expect
Expect long rows of brewery booths, each pouring several labels, from crisp everyday sake to premium junmai daiginjo. Between tastings you can try Niigata rice dishes, seafood and sweets, and browse glassware and brewing displays. Pace yourself with water, and use the spittoons if you want to sample widely without overdoing it.

Entry is by paid advance ticket, which typically includes a commemorative tasting cup; sessions can sell out, so buy early through the official channels. Visitors must be of legal drinking age (20+) to taste. Check the official site for the current price and session availability.
Tips for Visitors
Choose the morning session for shorter queues, and plan a short list of breweries you want to try first. Drink plenty of water, eat as you go, and never drive afterwards. Combine the trip with Niigata’s Bandai-jima waterfront and nearby sushi and sake bars.
