Overview
The Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Fire Festival (Nozawa Onsen Dosojin Matsuri) is a raucous winter rite held each January in the hot-spring and ski village of Nozawa Onsen, in northern Nagano. Men reaching the traditional unlucky ages of 25 and 42 build a large wooden shrine, then defend it against a torch-wielding crowd in a controlled battle of fire that lights up the snow. It is counted among Japan’s three great fire festivals and pairs perfectly with a ski trip or an onsen stay.
When & Where
The festival centres on 15 January every year, with preparations and the shrine build in the days before; in 2026 the main event falls on Thursday, 15 January. The action takes place at the festival ground in the centre of Nozawa Onsen village. Proceedings begin around 7:00 pm when the sacred fire is kindled, torch-lit processions start about 8:00 pm, the fire battle peaks after 8:30 pm, and the shrine is finally set fully ablaze near 10:00 pm. Nearest hub: Iiyama Station on the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
Getting There
From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Iiyama Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes), then a direct Nozawa Onsen Liner bus to the village (roughly 25 minutes). The village itself is compact and walkable but steep and snowy, so wear proper winter boots with grip. Because the festival runs late, confirm the last bus back or, better, stay overnight in the village to enjoy the free public hot springs.
What to Expect
Expect genuine intensity rather than a tidy spectacle. A tall wooden shrine (shaden) is raised for the night; the 42-year-old men sit on top while the 25-year-olds guard its base. Villagers charge with flaming torches, and the defenders beat them back in wave after wave before the whole structure is deliberately burned. Sake flows, taiko drums pound, and embers drift over the snow. Stand back from the front line, as sparks travel and the crowd surges.
Tickets & Access
Admission is free and there is no ticketing; you simply join the crowd around the festival ground. There is no reserved seating. Dress for deep-winter cold and possible snowfall, and keep flammable clothing and bags away from stray sparks.
Tips for Visitors
Arrive by early evening to find a safe viewing spot with a clear line to the shrine. Keep a buffer from the torch-bearers and watch for embers on synthetic coats. Combine the trip with Nozawa Onsen’s 13 free public bathhouses and, in season, its ski slopes.
