Atami Winter Fireworks 2026: Twenty Minutes Over the Bay

Atami stages its fireworks more than a dozen times a year, and the winter dates are the ones with the clearest air and the smallest crowds.

Overview

The Atami Sea Fireworks have run since 1952, and the town’s unusual approach is to hold them across all four seasons rather than only in summer. The bay works as a natural amphitheatre: hills wrap around the water, so the sound rebounds and the display feels closer than it is.

Winter editions are shorter on crowds and long on clarity – cold air makes the colours read sharper – and they pair naturally with an onsen stay.

When and where

The winter 2026 dates are Sunday 6 December and Friday 25 December, with a further display on Sunday 21 February 2027. Displays run from 20:20 to 20:40 and go ahead in rain.

Venue: Atami Bay, viewable from the beachfront and the surrounding hillsides.

Getting there

Atami is 40 to 50 minutes from Tokyo on the Kodama shinkansen, which makes an evening trip possible. From Atami Station the beachfront is about 15 minutes on foot or a short bus ride. Traffic control is only implemented for the July and August displays, so the winter dates are easier.

What to expect

A compact, intense 20 minutes rather than a long programme.

• Around 3,000 shells in the non-summer editions
• Sound echoing off the hills that ring Atami Bay
• Viewing from Sun Beach, the Marine Spa area and hotel rooms above the bay
• Paid seating and message fireworks arranged through the local hotel and ryokan association

Tickets and admission

Free to watch from public areas along the bay. Paid seating and dedication fireworks are handled by the Atami onsen hotel and ryokan cooperative. Many hotels sell rooms specifically for firework nights, at a premium.
