For four days the parks, plazas and shopping streets of central Shizuoka become performance pitches, and the city genuinely turns into a theatre.
Overview
The Daidogei World Cup began in 1992 as a citizens’ festival and has grown into one of Asia’s largest street-performing arts events, drawing crowds counted in the millions over its four days. From April 2026 it has been run by a dedicated organisation, the Shizuoka Festival Design Institute.
Performers come from Japan and overseas – jugglers, slack-wire artists, clowns, acrobats – and compete for the World Cup title, with a premium ticketed stage alongside the free street pitches.
When and where
The 2026 festival runs from Saturday 31 October to Tuesday 3 November, the last day being Culture Day. Performances run through the day at multiple sites.
Main venues: Sunpu Castle Park, Tokiwa Park, Aoba Symbol Road, and the Gofukucho and Shichikencho shopping streets, with a satellite site in Shimizu.
Getting there
Shizuoka is an hour from Tokyo on the Hikari shinkansen and 70 minutes from Nagoya. All the main venues are within 15 minutes’ walk of JR Shizuoka Station, so no local transport is needed. The Shimizu satellite venue at Dream Plaza is a short train ride away.

Tickets and admission
Street performances are free, though performers pass a hat and it is customary to give. The premium stage is ticketed separately. Buy the official guidebook on arrival: without the timetable it is hard to catch the acts you want.
Tips for visitors
Pick two or three performers from the programme and plan around their slots rather than wandering – the schedule is dense and the pitches are spread out. Weekday sessions are less crowded than the holiday. Bring small change for the hat, and expect to stand.
