Three thousand dancers in yukata fill the main street of a Kagoshima town, moving to a folk song that sounds more southern than mainland Japan.
Overview
The Kanoya Summer Festival (かのや夏祭り) is the biggest annual event on the Osumi Peninsula in eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. Its centrepiece is the So-odori, a massed street dance performed to Hanya-bushi.
Hanya-bushi is a bright, up-tempo folk song from southern Kyushu whose rhythm carries a distinctly maritime, almost Ryukyuan lilt. Danced by thousands of people in yukata along a closed main road, it is the sound the festival is built around.
Shinto rites at Yasaka Shrine bracket the dancing at either end of the main day, and the evening finishes with fireworks over the town centre.
When and Where
The 2026 festival ran on 31 July and 1 August. The eve festival began at 17:30 on 31 July. On the main day, 1 August, the Shutsugyo-sai ran 14:00 to 14:30 at Yasaka Shrine, the Kangyo-sai 16:40 to 17:00, the So-odori 17:00 to 20:35, and the “Machinaka Panorama Hanabi” fireworks from 20:35.
The eve festival is held at the Kanoya event plaza and outside the Rinascita Kanoya Galleria. The main day runs from Kanoya City Hall through the Kitada-cho area. Roads are closed between 15:00 and 21:00.
What to Expect
The main day is essentially one long dance with ceremonies at each end.
- Kanoya City put the 2026 turnout at 3,000 dancers; the prefectural tourism site describes more than 2,000 in past years.
- Dancers in yukata parade from Kanoya City Hall through the Kitada-cho area of the central shopping district.
- Shinto rites bracket the day: the Shutsugyo-sai departure rite at Yasaka Shrine in the early afternoon and the Kangyo-sai return rite in the late afternoon.
- The evening closes with the “Machinaka Panorama Hanabi” fireworks over the town centre.
- Spectators can vote for their favourite dance team online by scanning QR codes posted along the So-odori route.
- The separate large fireworks display held until 2019 was discontinued because Furue Port is no longer usable for launches.
Tickets and Admission
This is a street festival and no ticket is mentioned on the official pages. Neither the city nor the prefectural site states an admission fee.
Note that the 2026 edition was partially scaled back following the Kumamoto earthquake of 28 July 2026: the fire brigade music corps parade and the kamishimo costume procession were cancelled, some dance teams changed, and earthquake relief donations were collected.
Tips for Visitors
- Kanoya has no railway station. Plan on a bus or car from Kagoshima, and check return times before the fireworks.
- Stand somewhere along the Kitada-cho stretch rather than at the City Hall end — the dance is fully warmed up by the time it gets there.
- The So-odori runs for three and a half hours; there is no need to arrive for the start.
- Roads close from 15:00, so if you are driving, park before mid-afternoon.
