Overview
The Otsu Matsuri is the autumn festival of Tenson Shrine in Otsu, the lakeside capital of Shiga just east of Kyoto. Its thirteen ornate hikiyama floats are famous for karakuri, clever mechanical puppets that perform as the floats move. With more than four centuries of history and status as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is one of the finest float festivals on Lake Biwa’s shores.
When & Where
The festival takes place on the weekend before Sports Day, falling on October 10-11, 2026. The floats are displayed and lit on the eve, with the grand parade the following day through central Otsu near Tenson Shrine. Nearest station: Otsu on the JR Biwako Line, or Hama-Otsu on the Keihan line.
Getting There
Otsu is remarkably close to Kyoto, about 10 minutes by JR Biwako Line, making the festival an easy addition to a Kyoto stay. The floats parade through the compact city centre within walking distance of Otsu and Hama-Otsu stations. Tap an IC card at the gates and expect busier trains on the parade day.
What to Expect
On the eve, the tall, tapestry-draped floats are illuminated and hung with lanterns as crowds stroll between them. During the daytime parade the karakuri puppets spring to life at set stops, enacting scenes from legend and folklore, and lucky chimaki charms are tossed to spectators. The craftsmanship of the floats and the charm of the moving puppets set Otsu apart.
Tickets & Access
Watching from the streets is free. Paid grandstand seating is sometimes offered for the parade route; check the official information if you prefer a reserved view. The city centre is flat and walkable, though the narrow lanes around the shrine grow crowded during the puppet performances.
Tips for Visitors
Visit on the eve for the atmospheric lantern-lit floats, then return for the daytime karakuri parade. Position yourself near a scheduled puppet stop to catch the mechanisms in action, and try to catch a tossed chimaki charm. Kyoto’s proximity makes a half-day visit easy.
