The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan’s three great float festivals and famous for pairing giant lantern-lit floats with a rare winter fireworks display.
Overview
A UNESCO-listed festival of Chichibu Shrine, it features huge, ornately carved floats (yatai and kasaboko) covered in lanterns, hauled through town and up a steep slope to the accompaniment of taiko and flutes, while fireworks light the December sky.
When and Where
The festival is held every year on December 2–3 in central Chichibu City, Saitama, with the 3rd as the main day (floats and fireworks from evening).
Getting There
Take the Seibu Chichibu Line to Seibu-Chichibu Station or the Chichibu Railway to Chichibu Station, both a short walk from the route (about 90 minutes from central Tokyo).
What to Expect
The climax is the night haul of the heavy floats up Dango-zaka slope, cheered by crowds, as around 7,000 fireworks — unusual for winter — burst overhead.
Tips for Visitors
It is cold in December, so dress warmly. The evening of the 3rd (floats up the slope + fireworks) is the highlight; trains back are packed, so plan your return.
