Overview
The Nagahama Hikiyama Matsuri is a spring float festival held by Nagahama Hachimangu Shrine in northern Shiga, and a UNESCO-listed Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its distinctive feature is child kabuki: boys aged roughly five to twelve perform classic kabuki dramas on the stages of ornate wooden floats called hikiyama. Months of coaching go into each performance, making the festival a showcase of both craftsmanship and local devotion.
When & Where
The festival centres on April 15 each year, with the main hikiyama and kabuki events running April 13-16, 2026. Performances take place on floats around the shrine and through central Nagahama, with an indoor children’s kabuki viewing also scheduled during the run. Nearest station: Nagahama on the JR Hokuriku Line.
Getting There
Nagahama sits on the northeast shore of Lake Biwa, about an hour from Kyoto by JR train, often via Maibara. The old town and shrine are within walking distance of Nagahama Station, and the compact centre makes it easy to follow the floats between performance stops.
What to Expect
Each hikiyama carries a small stage where costumed boys perform full kabuki scenes to live narration and shamisen, drawing appreciative crowds. Between performances, teams haul the tall, lavishly decorated floats through the streets. The blend of serious young actors, gilded floats and centuries-old repertoire gives the festival a dignified, theatrical character.
Tickets & Access
Watching the outdoor performances and float processions is free. Some indoor viewings, such as the children’s kabuki held at the cultural hall, may have separate arrangements, so check the official schedule if you want a guaranteed seat. Streets can be busy around performance times but remain manageable.
Tips for Visitors
Pick up a schedule on arrival, as performances rotate between locations through the day. April can be cool by the lake, so bring a light jacket. Combine the trip with a stroll through Nagahama’s preserved glass-and-merchant district, Kurokabe Square.
