Makurazaki Port Festival 2026: Kyushu’s Biggest Firework over a Bonito Port

Southern Satsuma’s largest summer festival ends with a three-shaku-dama shell — the biggest firework launched anywhere in Kyushu — bursting over Japan’s foremost bonito port.
Overview
Its full name is a mouthful: Satsuma Kuroshio “Kibaran-kai” Makurazaki Minato Matsuri (さつま黒潮「きばらん海」枕崎港まつり). Kibaru is Satsuma dialect for giving something everything you have, and the organisers write the kai with the character for “sea”.
The festival began in August 1951 as a prayer for safe voyages, big catches and the prosperity of local industry, and both Makurazaki City and Kagoshima Prefecture describe it as the largest summer festival in southern Satsuma. Makurazaki is a serious fishing town — one of Japan’s principal bonito ports — and the festival is built around that.
When and Where
The festival falls on the first Saturday and Sunday of August. In 2026 that was Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August, with the fireworks on the Sunday only, from 20:00 for about an hour.
Events centre on Makurazaki Kaigan-dori and the fishing port area around Matsunoo-cho. Shells are launched from the port breakwater. The festival office sits on the second floor of the Makurazaki Fish Center.
What to Expect
- Roughly 10,000 fireworks over about an hour, including 100-shell simultaneous hyakushiki salvos, wide star-mines and original creative shells.
- A finale san-shaku-dama — Kyushu’s largest firework shell — funded entirely by citizen donations and signalled by a siren; 2026 was the 17th year it has been launched, against a fundraising target of three million yen. It goes up at 20:40.
- Saturday: brass bands, a performance by the dance group Fam, Hi-no-Kami taiko drumming and massed so-odori dance troupes.
- Sunday: the tairyo mikoshi big-catch portable shrine, stage bands, and free evening servings of fisherman’s hot pot and katsuo no tataki — seared bonito, the local speciality.
- Attendance runs to around 80,000 for the fireworks night.
Admission and Tickets
Attending is free. Reserved sajiki seating for the fireworks is sold separately through the official site; prices are announced each summer. A rain date of Sunday 30 August was reported for the 2026 fireworks in the event of severe weather, though this was not confirmed on the organiser’s own page.
Tips for Visitors
Allow one and a half to two times the usual travel time in both directions — the organisers say so explicitly, and the road out of Makurazaki after the finale is slow. Eat before the fireworks rather than after; the free bonito servings on Sunday evening go quickly. And the harbour breeze after dark is cooler than a Kagoshima August suggests, so bring a layer.
