Otawara’s biggest summer festival honours the legendary archer Nasu no Yoichi with street dancing and a spirited samurai procession through the heart of the city.
Overview
The Yoichi Matsuri celebrates Nasu no Yoichi, the famed archer of the Genpei War tied to this part of Tochigi. Over two evenings the main streets become a pedestrian zone filled with dancing and, on the second night, a costumed warrior parade.
When and Where
The 2026 festival runs Friday and Saturday, August 7 and 8, from around 3:00 to 9:00 p.m., along the central shopping streets of Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture.
Getting There
The venue is central Otawara. Reach it by bus from JR Nishinasuno Station, or from Nasushiobara Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen followed by a local bus or taxi.
What to Expect
Friday features the Yoichi Odori, a flowing street dance (about 6:15 to 8:00 p.m.). Saturday’s highlight is the Yoichi warrior procession (about 6:45 to 7:50 p.m.), with armoured generals, court ladies and local children in samurai costume parading down the street.
Tips for Visitors
The Saturday warrior procession is the main draw, so arrive early for a good roadside spot. It is an August evening event, so bring water and expect summer heat and crowds.
