A summer festival in the town that launches Japan’s rockets — mikoshi and street dancing by day, a 15,000-shell finale by night, on an island with no railway.
Overview
Minamitane sits at the southern end of Tanegashima, the island that hosts JAXA’s Tanegashima Space Centre — often described as the most scenic large launch site in the world. The town’s summer festival takes its name from that connection and has run since 1978, organised by the Rocket Matsuri Promotion Association out of the town hall’s planning division.
It is a genuinely local affair rather than a tourist production: neighbourhood portable shrines, a long street dance, and an evening of stage performances before the fireworks.
The Programme
The day runs in two halves.
- Part one, from 13:00 — Shinto rites at 13:00, the mikoshi parade from 13:55, and street dancing from 15:20, with children’s and neighbourhood portable shrines making their way through the Kaminaka town centre.
- Part two, from 17:30 — stage performances by local groups, mikoshi contest awards at 19:20 and an invited headline musical act at 19:35.
- Fireworks at 20:35, closing at 21:15. Kagoshima’s prefectural tourism board put the 2025 display at roughly 15,000 shells, choreographed with lasers and music.
Stall spaces are allocated by public application in advance, and the town has previously live-streamed the fireworks for people who cannot attend.
Getting There
Tanegashima has no railway. Reach the island by jetfoil from Kagoshima Port to Nishinoomote, about an hour and a half, or by air to Tanegashima Airport. From either arrival point it is 40 to 60 minutes by car south to Minamitane, and bus services thin out in the evening, so a rental car is effectively necessary if you are not staying in town. The venue is about three minutes on foot from the Minamitane Town Office.
Organisers say parking near the athletics field is limited and ask visitors to share cars and arrive early.
Dates and Admission
The 48th edition was scheduled by the town office for Sunday 9 August 2026, billed as the town’s 70th-anniversary running. The fireworks finale was postponed because of Typhoon No. 13, with a replacement date listed as to be announced — confirm with the town office or the promotion association on 0997-26-1111 before travelling for the display specifically.
Attendance is free with no reservation needed; food and goods stalls are paid.
Tips for Visitors
Book the ferry or flight and a rental car well ahead — Tanegashima has limited capacity and August is peak season. Check the JAXA launch schedule while you are planning: catching a launch and the festival on the same trip is the reason most visitors make the crossing. If the fireworks matter to you, confirm the rescheduled date first, since the daytime programme and the display may now fall on different days.
