Overview
Kawatana Summer Festival is a small-town August event staged around the Kawatana New Fishing Port in Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture. Its defining feature is proximity: the shells go up from the harbour breakwater a short distance from the crowd, which makes for unusually loud, close-range viewing compared with the big river displays elsewhere in Kyushu.
The bursts reflect off the surface of Omura Bay, which is the display’s signature look. Secondary listings put the shell count at roughly 3,000.
What to Expect

- A bon-odori dance gathering, a large prize draw, food stalls and a flea market through the afternoon and evening.

The festival is run by the Kawatana Summer Festival Executive Committee, whose secretariat sits inside the Higashisonogi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (0956-82-2068). The 2026 running was the 58th edition.
Getting There
JR Kawatana Station is on the Omura Line, roughly 30 minutes from Sasebo and about an hour from Nagasaki with a change. From the station it is a straightforward 15-minute walk down to the fishing port. Drivers have the free temporary car parks mentioned above. Expect the last trains to be busy immediately after the display finishes, so decide in advance whether you are staying local or heading straight back.
Dates and Admission
The main day in 2026 was Tuesday 11 August, which fell on the Mountain Day national holiday. Some listings describe a longer 8 to 11 August window; the 11th is the date confirmed by the prefectural tourism federation, and the wider window is unverified.
Free to attend with no reservation needed. Stalls and flea-market goods are paid.
Tips for Visitors
Get to the harbour front well before 20:30 — the good viewing strip along the port is narrow and fills up early. Because the launch point is so close, families with young children may prefer to watch from further back along the shoreline. Sasebo makes the easiest base if Kawatana itself is full, and the Omura Line runs late enough to get you back the same night.
