Fireworks fired against the cone of “Satsuma Fuji”, with the mountain wall throwing the sound back at you — every 11 August in Ibusuki.
Overview
Kaimon Natsu Matsuri (かいもん夏祭り) is held at the foot of Mount Kaimon, the 924-metre volcanic cone at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula that locals call Satsuma Fuji. The 2026 edition was the 58th, and marked twenty years since the founding of the merged Ibusuki City.
The display is modest in scale by Japanese standards — around 1,100 shells — but the setting does the work. The mountain wall reflects the report of the large shakudama shells, producing an unusually loud, reverberating boom that you feel as much as hear.

Date: Tuesday 11 August 2026 — Mountain Day. Held on Mountain Day every year.
Hours: festival 17:00–21:00; fireworks 20:30–21:00.
Venue: Kaimon Sanroku Fureai Park, Recreation Plaza, 2626 Kaimon Jutcho, Ibusuki City, Kagoshima.
In rain, only the fireworks are postponed to the next day; the stage events are cancelled outright.
Getting There
Kaimon Station, on the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line, is about twenty minutes on foot. By car it is roughly twenty minutes from Ei IC via the Ibusuki Skyline.
Traffic restrictions around the venue run 17:00–22:00. Car parks are signposted and roadside parking is prohibited; once the lots fill, the upper entrance to Waki hamlet is closed to traffic.
What to Expect
The evening opens at 17:00 with a Mountain Day rite and Kaimon Ryugu Taiko drumming, followed at 17:40 by the awards for the annual uchiwa fan design contest. From 18:00 the Ibusuki Onsen Festival mikoshi hayashi troupe performs, and from 18:30 there is a block of folk performing arts — dance, hula and Japanese classical dance. Hula is a regular fixture, reflecting Ibusuki’s identity as a subtropical resort town.
Night stalls fill the recreation plaza throughout. The fireworks launch at 20:30 and run for half an hour.
Tickets and Admission
Free, with no paid seating — the organisers confirm there are no reserved seats.
Tips for Visitors
Bring a torch. The organisers specifically ask visitors to do so — lighting between the car parks and the venue is poor.
Check the return timetable before you go. Kaimon is a small stop on a low-frequency single-track line, and the event ends at 21:00.
Plan around the 20:30 launch if rain threatens. Only the fireworks move to the following day; the stage programme is scrapped rather than postponed.
