A 40-metre flying dragon and a 30-metre princess dragon close out a one-day street festival in rural Yamagata, every 11 August.
Overview
Shonai Kiryusai (しょうない氢龍祭) is a young festival with old ingredients. It was created after the 2005 merger of the former towns of Amarume and Tachikawa, and deliberately fuses two local traditions: Amarume’s flying-dragon legend and Tachikawa’s dragon-deity worship.
The result is a compact, single-evening street festival that manages to feel genuinely local rather than staged for visitors — schoolchildren carry the dragons, the drumming group is from the town, and the food stalls sell Shonai produce. 2026 was the fifth edition.
When and Where
Date: Tuesday 11 August 2026 — Mountain Day, a public holiday. The festival is fixed to 11 August every year and does not move to a weekend.
Hours: main event 16:30–20:00; food-stall village and street stalls 15:00–21:00. Traffic restrictions 13:00–22:30.
Venue: Prefectural Route 44 around the Shonai Town Gallery and Onsen “Machi-yu”, Amarume, Shonai Town, Higashitagawa District, Yamagata.
Getting There
Amarume Station, on both the JR Uetsu Main Line and the Rikuu West Line, is about five minutes on foot from the course. Parking is limited and central roads close from 13:00 to 22:30, so the organisers ask visitors to come by train. Detour routes are published for those who must drive.
What to Expect
The evening follows a fixed running order: 16:30 opening and elementary-school dragon-carrying; 16:55 Amarume Hiryu Taiko drumming; 17:30 junior-high dragon-carrying; 18:30 the Kiryusai Parade of cheer and dance teams; and at 19:40 the finale dragon dance.
The two dragons are the point. Hiryu, the flying dragon, is 40 metres long; Himeryu, the princess dragon, is 30 metres. Both need large teams to carry, which is why the school sessions during the afternoon are part of the programme rather than a sideshow.
The stall village lists around 25 vendors of Yamagata and Shonai food, ranging from local fermented foods and Gassan ice cream to wood-fired pizza and banh mi.
Tickets and Admission
Free. There is no paid seating; food and goods are sold at the stalls.
Tips for Visitors
Come at 15:00 when the stalls open. That is ninety minutes before the main programme, and it lets you eat before the crowd builds for the 19:40 dragon finale.
Take the train to Amarume. Roads close from 13:00 and the station is a five-minute walk.
The date never moves. It is fixed to 11 August, Mountain Day, so plan around the holiday rather than looking for a weekend edition.
