Two shopping streets in the old port town of Sakata turn into a summer fairground of ennichi stalls, beer gardens and bon dancing.
Overview
Sakata Natsu no Ennichi Matsuri takes the atmosphere of a temple-fair ennichi — food stalls, games, cheap prizes — and spreads it across the shopping arcades of central Sakata over two days. 2026 is the fifth year it has run under this name.
It is deliberately unpretentious: local school performing arts, a bon odori you can join, a beer garden that stays open until nearly 21:00, and enough stalls that the point is simply to walk and eat.
When and Where
7 and 8 August 2026. The Friday runs roughly 17:30–20:45 on Odori shopping street; the Saturday runs from about 11:00 to 20:45 on Nakadori shopping street and in Chuo Park.
Sakata sits on the Shonai coast in northern Yamagata, about six minutes by car from JR Sakata Station.
What to Expect
- Day 1 on Odori: a local performing arts show by Hamada Elementary School (17:30–18:00), “Sakata no Bon Odori 2026” (18:00–18:50), and Sakata Jinku plus S-Jinku dancing (19:00–20:45)
- Beer gardens on both streets from 17:30 on the Friday and from 15:30 in Chuo Park on the Saturday
- Day 2 children’s ennichi games from 11:00, running until the prizes run out
- A “working vehicles” display 11:00–16:00 on the Saturday
- A mass gathering of ennichi food stalls 11:00–20:45 on the Saturday
- A music festival in Chuo Park, 15:30–20:00 on the Saturday
Admission and Practicalities
Entry is free; you pay at individual stalls, games and beer gardens.
The organisers state clearly that no dedicated event parking is provided. Enquiries go to Sakata Yume no Kura on 0234-24-2233.
Tips for Visitors
The Saturday is the fuller day, but the Friday evening bon odori is the one where visitors are actually pulled into the circle.
Do not confuse this with Sakata Matsuri, the much older Sanno-sai grand festival of the Kamishimo Hie Shrines, which runs in May.
Sakata is a good base for the Shonai region — Mount Chokai and the Sankyo warehouses are both within easy reach if you are staying the night.
