The summer light-up, scheduled for 7–16 August 2026 at Ninomaru Square, was called off following the magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto on 28 July 2026. Kumamoto City’s official tourism site now lists the event under a cancellation notice. The castle itself reopened to visitors on 13 August 2026. What REVIVAL 2026 Is
Kumamoto Castle REVIVAL 2026 is a year-long programme marking ten years since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, staged in four seasonal chapters themed around memory, mourning, gratitude and legacy. It is run by Kumamoto City’s Tourism Policy Division.
The spring chapter went ahead as planned: a panel exhibition on a decade of castle restoration, shown inside the paid castle area from 11 April to 6 May 2026.
The Summer Chapter
The summer chapter, subtitled Natsu no Irodori — Ayumi no Jutto and themed on mourning, was to be a limited evening light-up of Ninomaru Square rather than a projection-mapping show. It was scheduled for 7 to 16 August 2026, running 19:30–21:00 on weekdays and 19:30–21:30 at weekends, and would have been free to attend, since Ninomaru Square sits outside the paid castle area.
It was cancelled after the 28 July earthquake, which damaged the castle in 59 places including collapsed stone walls and cracked turret plaster. Buildings in the public area were largely unharmed.
Visiting the Castle Now
Kumamoto Castle reopened on 13 August 2026 after a temporary closure, with the keep and the elevated walkway accessible again. The Wakuwaku-za museum ticket office remained closed at the time of reopening. Conditions in the wider region were still unsettled in the weeks afterwards, so check current status before travelling.

Tips for Visitors
Do not build a trip around the autumn or winter REVIVAL chapters until they are confirmed — whether they proceed will depend on the recovery work. If you are visiting Kumamoto Castle itself, allow extra time: parts of the route change as restoration continues, and the elevated walkway can be busy. The castle is a short walk from Sakuramachi Bus Terminal, which is the easiest arrival point from the airport.
