Autumn Arita Ceramic Fair 2026: Kilns Open in the Porcelain Town
The spring pottery market brings a million people; the autumn fair is the one where you can actually talk to the potters.
Overview
Arita is where porcelain production began in Japan, after workable clay was found here in the early 1600s. The town’s famous event is the Golden Week pottery market, but the Autumn Arita Ceramic Fair, now in its 22nd year, is the calmer alternative: shopping at an unhurried pace, with kiln events and the town’s autumn colours as the backdrop.
Wood-fired kilns are opened specially during the fair, several workshops show the inside of a kiln before it is packed, and restaurants run seasonal menus.
When and where
The 2026 fair runs from Thursday 19 November to Monday 23 November, a public holiday, at venues throughout Arita town.
Nearest station: JR Arita, with shops and kilns spread along the valley from there.
Getting there
JR Arita is about 80 minutes from Hakata via Takeo-Onsen, or around 30 minutes from Sasebo. A local train and a bus link the main shopping areas, but the town is long and narrow, so check the fair’s shuttle arrangements or plan on a rental car if you want to reach the outlying kilns.
What to expect
Shopping is the core, with a programme of one-off events around it.
- Special public wood firings at member kilns
- Kiln interiors shown before loading, which is rarely possible outside the fair
- Photo contest, stamp rally and guided walking tours during the fair
- Kimono rental for strolling the pottery streets
- The town’s 30.5-metre great ginkgo, a national natural monument, usually at its peak in the same week
Tickets and admission
Free to attend; you pay for purchases and for any paid workshops. Nearby, the Kyushu Ceramic Museum in Arita has its own admission and is worth a couple of hours. Shipping is routinely arranged, including overseas.
Tips for visitors
Weekdays are noticeably quieter than the holiday weekend at the end. Pick up the fair pamphlet at the station or tourism office – it maps which kilns are firing on which day, which is the difference between a shopping trip and a proper visit. Pair Arita with Imari or Okawachiyama, the secluded valley where the Nabeshima domain’s official kilns worked.
