The autumn festival of Karatsu Shrine and one of Kyushu’s most famous float festivals, where fourteen giant lacquered hikiyama shaped like samurai helmets, sea bream and dragons are hauled through the streets.
Overview
Karatsu Kunchi’s floats are built from wood and lacquer, weigh two to four tonnes, and have been paraded for roughly four centuries. Their bold shapes — a red lion, a golden helmet, a leaping sea bream — make them some of the most striking festival floats in Japan.
When and Where
The 2026 festival runs November 2 to 4, with the main day on Tuesday, November 3 (Culture Day). It is centred on Karatsu Shrine and the streets of central Karatsu, Saga Prefecture.
Getting There
Take the JR Chikuhi Line to Karatsu Station (about 70 to 80 minutes from Fukuoka/Hakata). The float route runs through the city centre within walking distance of the station.
What to Expect
The highlight is November 3, when the huge floats are dragged across the soft sand of Nishinohama beach, wheels sinking in as teams strain to pull them free, accompanied by flutes, drums and chanting.
Tips for Visitors
November 3 is the most spectacular but most crowded day; the evening of November 2 offers illuminated floats (yoiyama) in a calmer mood. Dress warmly, as early-November mornings by the sea are chilly.
