Overview
The Arita Ceramic Fair is the largest pottery market in Japan, held each Golden Week in the small Saga town of Arita, where the country’s first porcelain was fired more than 400 years ago. For a week, the main street becomes a river of stalls as kilns, wholesalers and shops sell everything from everyday tableware to collector pieces, often at prices well below retail.
When & Where
The 122nd fair runs from April 29 to May 5, 2026. Stalls stretch for roughly four kilometres through central Arita, with the heaviest concentration between Arita and Kami-Arita stations. Nearest station: JR Arita (Sasebo Line), with extra trains laid on during the fair.
Getting There
From Fukuoka (Hakata), take a limited express toward Sasebo and change for Arita, or ride direct services that run during the holiday—allow around 1.5 to 2 hours. The fair is walkable from Arita Station; strolling one way and returning by train from Kami-Arita saves backtracking. An IC card covers most of the journey.
What to Expect
Around 400 vendors line the route, drawing well over a million visitors across the week. You can browse delicate blue-and-white Arita ware, browse seconds and outlet bins for bargains, and watch demonstrations of the painting and glazing that made the town famous. Food stalls and kiln open-houses round out the day.
Tickets & Access
Entry to the fair is free; you pay only for what you buy. Bring cash, as some small stalls may not take cards, and pack bubble wrap or a sturdy bag if you plan to carry fragile purchases home. Shipping can often be arranged for larger items.
Tips for Visitors
Come early in the day to beat the Golden Week crowds and the midday heat, and wear comfortable shoes for the long, gently sloping street. Weekdays within the holiday are marginally quieter than the weekend. Keep an eye out for outlet corners where seconds sell at deep discounts.
