Overview
The Fujikawaguchiko Autumn Leaves Festival celebrates peak fall colour on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchiko in Yamanashi. Its centrepiece is the Momiji Kairo, or Maple Corridor, where around 60 tall maples line a stretch of the Nashi River to form a fiery tunnel. By day the reds and golds frame views of Mt. Fuji across the lake; after sunset the trees are illuminated, drawing photographers from Japan and abroad.
When & Where
The 2026 festival runs from 7 to 29 November along the Maple Corridor near the lake’s north shore. Daytime hours suit strolling and Mt. Fuji photography, while the corridor’s illumination typically runs from sunset until around 9:00–9:30 pm. Food and craft stalls operate during the event. Nearest station: Kawaguchiko Station on the Fujikyu Railway.
Getting There
From Tokyo, take a direct highway bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko, or the train via Otsuki and the Fujikyu Railway to Kawaguchiko Station. From the station, the Kawaguchiko sightseeing ‘Retro’ bus runs around the lake to the Maple Corridor area, or you can rent a bicycle. Autumn weekends are busy, so start early and dress warmly for the chilly lakeside evenings.
What to Expect
Expect a compact but spectacular corridor of mature maples reflected in the stream, especially striking under the evening lights. On clear days Mt. Fuji provides a postcard backdrop across the lake. Stalls sell local foods such as hoto noodles and sweets, and viewpoints around the north shore offer classic Fuji-and-foliage compositions.
Tickets & Access
Entry to the festival and the illuminated corridor is free. There is no ticketing, though parking near the corridor is limited and fills quickly at peak times, so public transport is easier. Bring a tripod if you want night shots, and warm clothing for after dark.
Tips for Visitors
Colour usually peaks in mid-to-late November, but check current reports before travelling. Visit the corridor near sunset to catch both daylight and the illumination, and explore the wider north shore for open Mt. Fuji views. Weekdays are far less crowded than weekends.
