Overview
The Koromo Festival is the annual autumn festival of Koromo Shrine in Toyota City, Aichi. Eight tall wooden floats (dashi), around four metres high and weighing several tonnes, are wheeled through the city while huge quantities of coloured confetti fill the air and crews chant ‘Oisa!’. Blending solemn Shinto ritual with exuberant street energy, it is a designated local folk cultural property and one of the liveliest float festivals in the Nagoya region.
When & Where
The festival is held on the third Sunday of October and the preceding Saturday, which in 2026 means 17–18 October. The Saturday ‘rehearsal’ day sees the floats paraded and evening Shinto ceremonies at Koromo Shrine, with fireworks by the Yahagi River; on the Sunday main day the floats gather at the shrine and parade through downtown Toyota. Nearest station: Toyota-shi Station on the Meitetsu line.
Getting There
From Nagoya, take the Meitetsu Toyota Line toward Toyota-shi Station (roughly 45 minutes, sometimes with a transfer), then walk into the central festival streets. The area around the station and Koromo Shrine is walkable. Expect crowds and some street closures on both days; use trains rather than driving, and an IC card for easy transfers.
What to Expect
The signature sight is the floats moving through dense clouds of thrown confetti, with pull-teams heaving them around corners to rhythmic chants. Daytime brings karakuri-style float displays and shrine rites; the Saturday evening adds riverside fireworks. It is loud, colourful and physical, with a strong community spirit.
Tickets & Access
Watching is free and takes place in public streets and the shrine grounds; there is no general ticketing. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting covered in confetti, and keep a safe distance when the heavy floats are being turned.
Tips for Visitors
Come on the Saturday for floats plus riverside fireworks, or the Sunday for the full daytime parade. Stake out a corner where floats pivot for the best action shots. Combine with the Toyota Automobile Museum or nearby Korankei gorge, which is stunning in autumn.
