Overview
The Ohara Matsuri is southern Kyushu’s largest autumn festival, taking over the Tenmonkan district of central Kagoshima each November. Its heart is the So-odori, a mass dance in which tens of thousands of costumed participants move through the streets to folk tunes such as Ohara-bushi and Kagoshima Hanya-bushi. With drumming, colourful teams and an open, celebratory mood, it turns the city centre into one enormous dance floor beneath the volcano of Sakurajima.

The festival runs on November 2 and 3, 2026, with a night festival on the 2nd and the main day on the 3rd, a national holiday. Events centre on the Tenmonkan shopping and entertainment district in Kagoshima City. Nearest access: the city tram to Tenmonkan-dori.
Getting There
Kagoshima is served by shinkansen at Kagoshima-Chuo Station, from where the city tram reaches the Tenmonkan-dori stop in a few minutes; the festival area is right around the arcades there. Trams and buses are the easiest way around the compact centre. Expect the district to be busy, and use an IC card to move quickly between stops.
What to Expect
The signature sight is wave after wave of dancers—by some counts around twenty thousand—performing the So-odori in matching outfits down the main streets. Taiko drumming, folk singing and the occasional modern twist on the choreography keep the energy high. The night festival on the 2nd has a more relaxed, lantern-lit feel before the grand daytime parade.
Tickets & Access
The festival is free to watch from the streets, with no ticket required. Viewing is first-come along the routes through Tenmonkan. Food and drink are easy to find in the surrounding arcades and stalls.
Tips for Visitors
Arrive early on November 3 for a good streetside spot before the main dance, and explore the night festival on the 2nd for a calmer atmosphere. Combine your visit with a ferry trip to Sakurajima or a soak in a local foot bath. Autumn days are mild, but bring a layer for the evening.
