Overview
The Yamaga Toro Matsuri is a graceful midsummer festival in the old hot-spring town of Yamaga in northern Kumamoto. Its symbol is the Yamaga lantern—an elaborate ornament made entirely of washi paper and glue, with no wood or metal—and its signature is the Sennin Toro Odori, in which around a thousand women in matching yukata dance slowly with lit golden lanterns crowning their heads. The effect, set to the plaintive Yoheho melody, is one of Kyushu’s most enchanting summer sights.
When & Where
The festival is held on August 15 and 16, 2026. Fireworks brighten the sky on the 15th, and the climactic Thousand-Lantern Dance takes place on the 16th, roughly 20:00 to 21:00. Events centre on the town of Yamaga and Omiya Shrine, its guardian shrine. Yamaga has no railway station, so plan on bus access.
Getting There
From Kumamoto, take a bus to the Yamaga Bus Center, about 60 to 70 minutes; there is no train line to Yamaga, so buses or a car are the practical options. From Fukuoka you can reach Kumamoto by shinkansen and transfer to the bus. Services are busier during the festival, so check timetables and allow for a late return or an overnight stay.
What to Expect
By day you can see the paper lanterns up close and learn how they are folded without any frame. After dark the town fills with dancers whose head-mounted lanterns glow gold as they move in unison. The Sennin Toro Odori at the sports park is the highlight; the paper craft, the fireworks and the slow, hypnotic dance together define the festival.
Tickets & Access
The street processions and lantern displays are free to enjoy. The main Thousand-Lantern Dance in the arena typically offers paid reserved seating for the best view, while general areas remain free. Check the local tourism office for current seating and any advance tickets.
Tips for Visitors
Book accommodation early, as the small town fills up for the festival, and arrive before the evening dance to secure a spot. August nights are hot and humid, so bring water and a fan. A daytime visit lets you appreciate the astonishing paper lanterns before the crowds arrive.
