Saga International Balloon Fiesta 2026: Asia’s Biggest Balloon Sky

Hot-air balloons launching at the Saga International Balloon Fiesta

Kyushu-Okinawa · SagaSports

Around a hundred hot-air balloons race and glow over the Kase River in Asia’s largest ballooning event.

Overview

The Saga International Balloon Fiesta is the biggest hot-air balloon competition in Asia, filling the skies above the Kase River in Saga City each autumn. Pilots from around the world compete in precision flying tasks by day, while evening “balloon glow” displays light the launch field. Part sporting contest, part spectacle, it draws hundreds of thousands of spectators over its run.

When & Where

The 2026 fiesta takes place from October 30 to November 3, on the riverside competition field beside the Kase River in Saga City. Competition launches are held in the early morning and again in the afternoon, weather permitting. A temporary JR station, Balloon Saga, opens beside the venue for the duration of the event.

Getting There

During the fiesta, JR runs a temporary Balloon Saga Station on the Nagasaki Main Line right next to the field, just minutes from Saga Station and easily reached from Hakata by limited express. Outside the event, buses serve the site from Saga Station. Morning flights start very early, so check the first train times if you want to catch the dawn launch.

What to Expect

Roughly a hundred balloons take part, competing in tasks such as hitting ground targets for accuracy. Crowd favourites include the whimsical special-shaped balloons and the evening La Montgolfier Nocturne, when tethered balloons fire their burners in time to music, glowing against the night. Food stalls and family activities fill the field between flights.

Tickets & Access

General admission to the fiesta is free, with some paid or premium viewing areas available. Because flights depend on the weather, sessions can be delayed or cancelled, so check the official site or social channels on the day. Arrive with time to spare for the popular morning competition.

Tips for Visitors

Come at dawn for the mass ascension and the calmest flying conditions, and dress warmly, as autumn mornings by the river are cold. Use the temporary Balloon Saga Station to skip traffic. Bring a camera with spare battery—the colours over the water are the fiesta’s signature shot.
