Overview
The Okinawa Zento Eisa Matsuri is the island’s largest eisa festival, gathering youth groups from across Okinawa for three days of powerful drumming and dance in Okinawa City. Eisa is a traditional Bon-season performance honouring ancestors, driven by big taiko drums, chanting and swirling choreography. Running since 1956 and drawing crowds in the hundreds of thousands, it is a highlight of the Okinawan summer.
When & Where
In 2026 the festival is held over three days in early September, with a street parade on the opening evening and stage performances on the following days; the opening is scheduled for September 4, with performances on September 5 and 6. The parade runs along Gate 2 Street, and the main performances take place at the Koza Sports Park Athletic Field in Okinawa City.
Getting There
From Naha, reach Okinawa City (Koza) by highway or local bus in roughly 50 to 70 minutes; the Yui monorail does not extend this far, so bus or car is necessary. Buses run from the Naha bus terminal, and there is parking near the sports park. Give yourself extra time on performance evenings, when the area is busy.
What to Expect
Each seinenkai youth association performs its own eisa style, with lines of drummers, hand-drum players and dancers moving to island songs. The atmosphere builds across the evenings to a finale of fireworks and a communal kachashi, the free-form Okinawan dance that invites everyone to join. Expect relentless drumming, vivid costumes and a joyous, family-friendly crowd.
Tickets & Access
Admission is free, though some reserved seating at the main venue may be sold in advance. The opening street parade is free to watch from the roadside. Confirm the exact schedule locally, as start times and dates can shift slightly year to year.
Tips for Visitors
Bring water and light clothing for the subtropical heat, and arrive early on the final evening for the fireworks and kachashi finale. The parade night on Gate 2 Street offers a close-up view of the groups. Renting a car makes the trip from Naha and the return far easier after the show.
