Kawachi Wisteria Garden 2026: Fukuoka’s Wisteria Tunnels

Two long tunnels of hanging wisteria bloom in curtains of purple, pink and white above the hills of Kitakyushu.

Overview

Kawachi Wisteria Garden, or Kawachi Fujien, is a privately run flower garden in the hills of Kitakyushu, northern Fukuoka, celebrated for its spectacular wisteria tunnels. When the vines flower in spring, visitors walk beneath cascading blooms in shades of white, pink and deep violet, with a domed trellis crowning the hillside. The garden opens only for its two peak seasons, and the wisteria display is the more famous of the two.

When & Where

For the 2026 wisteria season the garden opens from April 18 to May 6, daily from 8:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:20. Peak colour usually falls around late April into early May. The garden is in the Kawachi area of Yahatahigashi Ward, Kitakyushu. Entry during the peak requires a date-and-time ticket bought in advance.

Getting There

The garden sits in the hills and is easiest to reach by car or taxi; during the season a shuttle bus operates from JR Yahata Station to the site. Access is deliberately managed to control crowds, so buy your timed ticket ahead of your visit—walk-up entry is not permitted at peak. Allow extra travel time, as roads nearby can be congested during Golden Week.

What to Expect

The highlights are two wisteria tunnels, the longer stretching many metres, plus a great dome of trellised vines. Around 150 wisteria plants of some twenty varieties bloom together, layering their colours overhead. The steep setting gives sweeping views over the flowers, and the garden has repeatedly appeared on lists of the world’s most beautiful natural spots.

Tickets & Access

Admission is a timed ticket, priced around 1,000–1,600 yen for adults depending on how full the blooms are, and free for young children. Tickets must be purchased in advance—typically online from late March or via convenience-store machines—because the garden caps numbers per time slot. Check the official site for the current bloom status and pricing.

Tips for Visitors

Book the earliest time slot you can for softer light and thinner crowds, and wear sturdy shoes for the sloping paths. Visit on a weekday within the season if possible, as Golden Week weekends sell out fastest. Bring sun protection and confirm the day’s bloom level before you set out.
