Overview
Tobata Gion Yamagasa is a summer float festival in the Tobata district of Kitakyushu, northern Fukuoka, famous for a dramatic day-to-night transformation. In daylight the floats are hung with embroidered banners; after dark the banners come off and the frames are rebuilt into towering “lantern pyramids” glowing with hundreds of candlelit lanterns. Dating back around 120 years, it is inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list as part of Japan’s Yama-Hoko-Yatai float festivals.
When & Where
The festival is held over the fourth weekend of July; in 2026 the main days fall around July 24 to 26. Events take place in central Tobata Ward, Kitakyushu, with floats gathering near the ward’s main streets and shrines. Nearest station: JR Tobata (Kagoshima Main Line).
Getting There
Take the JR Kagoshima Main Line to Tobata Station, a short walk from the festival area; Kitakyushu is easily reached by rapid train from Hakata or by shinkansen to Kokura and a local transfer. Trains are busy on festival nights, so use an IC card and check the last service back to your base before the crowds build.
What to Expect
The signature sight is the nobori-yamagasa becoming chochin-yamagasa: a stacked structure rising roughly ten metres, tiered with more than three hundred lanterns that sway as teams shoulder the float and run. Drummers and bearers chant as the illuminated pyramids move through the dark, a spectacle that gives the festival its nickname as a “festival of light.”
Tickets & Access
Viewing along the streets is free and no ticket is required. Some vantage points and gathering squares fill early on the main lantern night. Follow steward guidance, as the heavy floats are carried at pace through the crowds.
Tips for Visitors
Come for the evening to see the lanterns lit, and arrive early to claim a clear line of sight along the parade route. July nights are hot and humid, so bring water and a fan. A spot near a turning point rewards you with the best view of the swaying lantern tiers.
