A riverside summer festival in the Aizu valley, with taiko, yosakoi dancing and a fireworks finale — held in a park that has its own railway station.
Overview
Shimogo Furusato Matsuri (下郭ふるさと祭り) is the main summer festival of Shimogo Town in the Minamiaizu district of Fukushima. It is held at Okawa Furusato Park on the banks of the Aga River, and runs alongside Aizu YOSAKOI — Natsu no Jin, a yosakoi-soran dance competition that draws teams from across eastern Japan.
This is a community festival rather than a tourist spectacle: the programme is built from local taiko groups, schoolchildren, kagura performers and inter-district contests. That is precisely its appeal if you want to see a Tohoku town at play rather than a staged event.
Please note: as of August 2026 the organisers have not published 2026 dates, and the event does not appear on the town tourism agency’s current calendar. The date shown here follows the usual late-July weekend pattern and should be confirmed with the organiser before you travel.
When and Where

Hours (typical): eve festival Saturday from about 13:30, fireworks from about 20:00; main festival Sunday about 09:00–18:00.

Nearest station: Okawa Furusato Koen Station on the Aizu Railway — about three minutes on foot.
Getting There
Take the Aizu Railway Aizu Line from Aizu-Wakamatsu towards Aizu-Tajima and get off at Okawa Furusato Koen, a station named after the park itself. The walk is about three minutes.
By car it is roughly 50 minutes from Shirakawa IC on the Tohoku Expressway or about 70 minutes from Aizu-Wakamatsu IC. The organisers actively ask visitors to use the railway because of congestion. If you stay for the fireworks, check the last trains carefully — on eve-festival evenings they leave at around 20:46 towards Wakamatsu and 20:02 towards Tajima, which is before the evening fully winds down.
What to Expect
The eve festival opens with a signal firework and taiko drumming by the Okawa Keiryu Taiko preservation society, and closes with a music-synchronised fireworks display over the park.
Sunday begins with Sanshi Daikagura, a sacred lion dance performed to drive off misfortune and pray for the townspeople’s health, followed by a schoolchildren’s soran dance. The yosakoi competition then runs in blocks through the day, including a junior tournament for teams from eastern Japan.
Between the stage blocks the park fills with community contests: an inter-district tamaire ball-toss tournament with heats and a final, a treasure-fishing game for children, a ground-golf tournament on the park’s sports ground, and a closing prize draw.
Tickets and Admission
Free. There is no ticketed seating; the park is open ground and the fireworks are watched from the riverside.
Tips for Visitors
Confirm the date first. Contact the Shimogo Town Chamber of Commerce or the town tourism agency (0241-67-2416) before planning a trip, as the 2026 edition had not been announced.
Check the last train before the fireworks start. Services in both directions leave before the evening ends, and taxis in this valley are scarce.
Build a day around the Aizu Railway. Ouchi-juku, the thatched-roof post town, and the Tono-Hetsuri river cliffs are on the same line, so the festival slots easily into a wider Aizu itinerary.
