Miyazaki City closes its main shopping street for two days each July and hands it to a mass citizens’ dance — the 23rd edition ran on 25 and 26 July 2026.
Overview
Matsuri Erekoccha Miyazaki (まつりえれこっちゃみやざき) takes its name from a Miyazaki dialect exclamation. It is a modern civic festival rather than a shrine rite: the 2026 theme was “a citizens’ festival we all create”, and the programme is built around participation instead of spectating.
The centrepiece is the shimin so-odori, a mass citizens’ dance down Tachibana-dori, supported by a dance contest, stage acts and street food. Miyazaki Prefecture files the event simultaneously under festivals, music and gourmet — which is a fair description of how it actually feels on the ground.
When and Where
Dates: 25–26 July 2026 (23rd edition). The festival is held annually in late July.
Hours: not published officially. Road closures on Tachibana-dori 1–3 chome reported from around 15:00 to 21:00 indicate a late-afternoon-to-evening programme.

Getting There
From the west exit of JR Miyazaki Station, walk west along Takachiho-dori for about eleven to fifteen minutes to reach the Tachibana-dori 3-chome intersection. From Miyazaki Airport, the JR Miyazaki Kuko Line reaches Miyazaki Station in around ten minutes.
City bus routes are diverted during the road closures, so walking from the station is more reliable than trying to bus in. Driving into the centre is not practical on festival days.
What to Expect
The fixed elements are the mass citizens’ dance and the dance contest, staged along Tachibana-dori with the prefectural-office end of Kusunami-dori also in use.
Each edition adds one-off programmes. In 2026 these included a Guinness World Record attempt for the most people simultaneously pouring a drink, staged at the Tachibana-dori 3-chome stage on 26 July, and a Baby Stroller Grand Parade on 25 July for families with children aged roughly zero to four. Both required advance registration through the organiser rather than walk-up participation.
Tickets and Admission
Free. It is an open street festival with no gate. Some participatory programmes require sign-up in advance via the organiser’s website.
Tips for Visitors
Arrive on foot from JR Miyazaki Station. With Tachibana-dori closed and buses rerouted, the fifteen-minute walk is the simplest approach.
Register early if you want to join in. The headline participatory events close registration weeks ahead; watching is free and unrestricted.
Enquiries are weekday-only. The festival office (0985-83-2216) is staffed 10:00–17:00 on weekdays, so ask questions before the weekend of the event.
