Yamagata Hanagasa Festival 2026: Flower-Hat Dancers Fill the Streets

Dancers with flower-decorated hats at the Yamagata Hanagasa Festival

Tohoku · YamagataDance

Thousands of dancers sweep through central Yamagata twirling flower-decorated straw hats to a driving drumbeat.

Overview

The Yamagata Hanagasa Festival is one of Tohoku’s four great summer festivals. Around ten thousand dancers parade over three evenings, rhythmically waving hanagasa, straw hats trimmed with red safflower blossoms, to the beat of taiko drums and the shout of ‘yassho, makasho’. The energy, colour and scale make it an accessible, joyful introduction to the region’s festival season.

When & Where

The 2026 festival runs August 5 to 7, with the parade beginning around 18:00 each evening and continuing until roughly 21:45. It takes over the main avenue through central Yamagata City. Nearest station: JR Yamagata Station.

Getting There

Yamagata Station is the terminus of the Yamagata Shinkansen, about three hours from Tokyo. The parade route is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the station, and the city centre is compact enough to explore on foot between performances.

What to Expect

  • Around 10,000 dancers over three evenings
  • Rhythmic waving of safflower-decorated hanagasa hats
  • The chanted call of ‘yassho, makasho’
  • Taiko drums and floats leading each procession
  • Different dance styles from groups across the region

Tickets & Access

Roadside viewing is free. Paid grandstand seats are usually sold for those who want a guaranteed spot along the route.

Tips for Visitors

Arrive before the 18:00 start to claim a kerbside position, as the route fills quickly. It is peak summer heat, so stay hydrated, and look out for the finale when spectators are sometimes invited to join the dancing.
