Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri is one of Japan’s three great festivals, combining a grand land procession with a river boat parade and a fireworks finale.
Overview
Held by Osaka Tenmangu for over 1,000 years to honour the deity of learning, Sugawara no Michizane, the festival moves from the shrine through the streets and onto the Okawa River in a torch- and lantern-lit flotilla.
When and Where
The main days are July 24 (yomiya) and July 25 (honmiya) every year, centred on Osaka Tenmangu and the Okawa River, Osaka. The boat procession and fireworks are on the evening of the 25th.
Getting There
Osaka Tenmangu is by Osakatemmangu Station (JR Tozai Line) or Minamimorimachi Station (subway), a short walk from the shrine and river.
What to Expect
A costumed land procession of around 3,000 people, then some 100 boats parading on the river as around 3,000 fireworks light the sky — the festival’s signature moment.
Tips for Visitors
The evening of July 25 is the highlight (boats + fireworks). Riverbanks fill up fast, so stake out a spot early or consider a paid viewing area. Summer heat is intense — bring water.
