Sendai’s Tanabata is the grandest of Japan’s star festivals, draping the downtown arcades in thousands of huge, handmade paper-and-bamboo decorations.
Overview
Dating to the era of Date Masamune, Sendai Tanabata fills the covered shopping streets with towering streamers (fukinagashi) up to several metres long, each handcrafted from washi paper in vivid colours.
When and Where
The festival is held every year on August 6–8 throughout central Sendai, especially the Chuo-dori and Ichibancho arcades, Miyagi Prefecture.
Getting There
The arcades are a short walk from JR Sendai Station (about 1.5 hours from Tokyo by Tohoku Shinkansen).
What to Expect
Walking beneath a canopy of enormous, colourful streamers by day, with food stalls and events nearby. The evening before (August 5) features a fireworks display.
Tips for Visitors
The decorations are best seen by day in the arcades (rain-safe, since they’re covered). Catch the August 5 fireworks the evening before. It gets very crowded on weekends.
