Morioka’s Sansa Odori is a joyful summer festival of massed taiko drumming and dancing, and holds a record as one of the world’s largest taiko parades.
Overview
Thousands of drummers, dancers and flute players fill the main street each evening in a rolling parade, inviting spectators to join the dancing at the end. The finale features a “world’s largest taiko parade” and a great circle dance.
When and Where
The 2026 festival runs August 1–4 along Chuo-dori in central Morioka, Iwate, with parades each evening from about 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Getting There
Chuo-dori is a short walk from JR Morioka Station (about 2 hours 10 minutes from Tokyo on the Tohoku/Akita Shinkansen).
What to Expect
A wall of synchronised taiko, colourful dancers, and an upbeat, participatory mood. On the last night (August 4), the grand drum parade and mass “Rings of Dance” close the festival.
Tips for Visitors
Anyone can join the closing dance — watch the steps and jump in. Evenings are the main event; arrive early for a spot along Chuo-dori.
