Akita’s Kanto Matsuri sees performers balance towering bamboo poles hung with dozens of glowing lanterns on their palms, foreheads and hips — a dazzling test of skill.
Overview
Each kanto pole stands up to 12 metres and carries 46 paper lanterns, weighing around 50 kg. Performers pass them from hand to forehead to hip in a prayer for a good harvest, lit gold against the night.
When and Where
The festival is held every year on August 3–6 along Kanto Odori in central Akita City, Akita Prefecture, with evening performances and daytime skill competitions.
Getting There
Kanto Odori is about a 15-minute walk from JR Akita Station (roughly 4 hours from Tokyo via the Akita Shinkansen).
What to Expect
Rows of performers raising illuminated poles in unison, swaying with the balance, to flutes and drums. By day, the daytime competition shows the technique up close.
Tips for Visitors
Go in the evening for the lantern spectacle. Paid seats give the best view of the raised poles; otherwise line up early along Kanto Odori. Combine with the daytime skill contest.
