Matsue Suitoro 2026: Lantern-Lit Nights in a Castle Town

Matsue Castle, centrepiece of the Matsue Suitoro water lantern festival

Chugoku · ShimaneIllumination

Hundreds of soft lanterns light the moat, streets and castle grounds of Matsue on autumn evenings.

Overview

Matsue Suitoro, the Matsue Water Lantern Festival, is one of Japan’s most atmospheric autumn night events, staged in the scenic castle town of Matsue in Shimane. On selected evenings, warm lantern light illuminates the grounds of Matsue Castle, the willow-lined Shiomi Nawate street and the Horikawa moat, weaving a quiet landscape of light and shadow unique to this well-preserved feudal town.

When & Where

Held on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 26 September to 18 October 2026 (nine evenings in all), roughly 18:00–21:00. Main areas: Matsue Castle, Shiomi Nawate and the Horikawa canal.

Getting There

From JR Matsue Station, the castle area is a short bus ride or about a 20-minute walk. The Lakeline loop bus links the station, castle and Shiomi Nawate. Matsue is reached via Izumo Airport or by the JR San’in Line along the coast.

What to Expect

Expect illuminated stone walls and turrets, rows of hand-crafted lanterns lining the old samurai street, and the option to see it all from a Horikawa sightseeing boat gliding along the moat under the lights. The mood is calm and contemplative rather than crowded and loud.

Tickets & Access

Strolling the lantern-lit streets is free. The Horikawa moat boat cruise and entry to Matsue Castle’s keep are ticketed separately; an evening boat ride is a memorable way to experience the illumination.

Tips for Visitors

Combine the lanterns with a sunset over Lake Shinji, famous as one of Japan’s finest. Evenings can be cool in autumn, so bring a light jacket, and check which dates fall within the event before you travel.
