Boats bearing court musicians glide across the sea by Miyajima’s floating torii in one of Japan’s most elegant water festivals.
Overview
Kangensai is the principal annual festival of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima and one of the most refined water festivals in Japan. Following the old lunar calendar, in 2026 it falls on 30 July. A deity is carried aboard a decorated goza-bune boat that is towed across the sea between shrines while musicians play elegant kangen court music on flutes, strings and drums. Lantern light on the water and the great floating torii gate make it a mesmerising, unhurried spectacle.
When & Where
30 July 2026, at and around Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima (Hatsukaichi), Hiroshima. The ritual runs from mid-afternoon until close to midnight, timed to the tides.
Getting There
Take the JR Sanyo Line or a Hiroden tram to Miyajimaguchi, then the ferry to Miyajima (about 10 minutes); the shrine is a short walk from the pier. Because the festival ends late and the tide governs the schedule, check the last ferry and consider staying on the island.
What to Expect
The slow procession of the illuminated goza-bune, the sound of kangen music drifting over the water, and boats gathering near the torii as the tide rises. It is contemplative rather than raucous — a night of light, music and reflection on the Seto Inland Sea.
Tickets & Access
Watching from the shore and the shrine approach is free. Some boat-viewing options may be arranged locally, and the standard shrine admission applies for daytime entry to Itsukushima.
Tips for Visitors
Tide times are everything — aim to be in place as the water rises around the torii. Bring a torch for the walk back, book island lodging if you can, and confirm ferry times before the ritual ends.
