A doh is a drum big enough for two or three people to sit beside inside its float, and Matsue pulls them through the streets by rope.
Overview
The Matsue Doh Gyoretsu is the autumn festival of the old castle town, run by the Matsue Doh Gyoretsu Preservation Society, whose predecessor was formed in 1960. Each participating district owns a doh-gu, a wheeled wooden shrine housing an enormous drum, and hauls it through the centre of the city with drummers playing on board.
The sound is the reason to go: several of these floats converging on the same street produce a physical, low-frequency rumble you feel more than hear.
When and where
The parade is held every year on the third Sunday of October, and the preservation society has confirmed 18 October for 2026. Floats move through the central streets during the day.
Nearest station: JR Matsue, with the route running through the city centre nearby.
Getting there
Matsue is about 2 hours 40 minutes from Okayama on the Yakumo limited express, or a short flight to Izumo Airport plus a 40-minute bus. Within the city everything is walkable or a short bus ride; the lakefront and castle are both close to the parade route.

This is a daytime street festival, easy to dip in and out of.

Tickets and admission
Free to watch from the street. Matsue Castle keeps its normal admission if you climb the keep, and the Horikawa moat boat cruise runs as usual.
Tips for visitors
Ask at the station tourist office for the day’s route sheet – the floats move on a timetable and knowing where they converge saves a lot of wandering. Combine the festival with the Horikawa boat ride and Lake Shinji at sunset for a full day. Mid-October in Matsue can be wet, so carry a compact umbrella.
