Overview
Hifuri Shinji is a fire-swinging rite held each March at Aso Shrine, in the vast volcanic caldera of central Kumamoto. Participants light bundles of dried grass tied to cords and spin them in glowing arcs to purify the path for a sacred marriage of two deities enshrined here, praying for a fruitful rice harvest. It forms part of a wider month-long fire festival across the Aso region and is designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
When & Where
The ritual is customarily held in mid-March, traditionally on the third Saturday of the month; in 2026 that falls around March 21, though visitors should confirm the exact date with the shrine or local tourism office before travelling. It takes place at Aso Shrine in the Ichinomiya district of Aso City. Nearest station: Miyaji (JR Hohi Main Line).
Getting There
From Kumamoto, take the JR Hohi Main Line toward Miyaji and alight at Miyaji Station, about a 15-minute walk from Aso Shrine; buses also serve the Aso area from Kumamoto and Aso stations. Mountain weather is cold after dark in March, and rural train service is infrequent, so plan your return in advance and keep warm layers on hand.
What to Expect
As night falls, glowing bundles are swung on ropes, tracing circles of fire while embers scatter across the shrine approach. The fire greets a symbolic bridal procession of the enshrined kami. Around the same season the region stages the Dai Himonjiyaki, a giant burning character for “fire” lit on the slope of Ojo-dake, and noyaki controlled grass-burning that keeps the Aso grasslands healthy.
Tickets & Access
Admission is free and no ticket is required. Viewing is from the shrine grounds; because burning material is swung close to spectators, keep a safe distance, mind your clothing, and follow all instructions from stewards. Note that parts of Aso Shrine have been undergoing reconstruction following the 2016 earthquake.
Tips for Visitors
Dress for a cold mountain night with gloves and warm footwear, and avoid flammable synthetic outerwear near the flames. Arrive early to secure a viewpoint along the approach. Pair the trip with daytime sightseeing around the Aso caldera and its grasslands.
