Overview
The Itoman Haaree is a traditional dragon-boat race held each early summer in the fishing town of Itoman on Okinawa’s main island. Crews row brightly painted wooden sabani boats to pray for safety at sea and a bountiful catch, in a ritual that locals trace back more than five centuries. Unlike the larger, more tourist-oriented races in Naha, Itoman keeps a tightly local, workaday atmosphere—right down to a boat-capsizing contest.
When & Where
The races follow the lunar calendar, falling on the fourth day of the fifth lunar month; in 2026 that is June 18. They are held at Itoman Fishing Port on the south coast of Okinawa Island. There is no railway in southern Okinawa, so plan road transport from Naha.
Getting There
From Naha, reach Itoman by local bus (roughly 40–60 minutes) or by car or taxi; the town lies at the southern tip of the island, beyond the reach of the Naha monorail. Buses run from the Naha bus terminal near Asahibashi. Give yourself buffer time on race day, as parking near the harbour is limited.
What to Expect
Teams representing the town’s fishing districts sprint their sabani across the harbour to the beat of drums and cheering. A distinctive feature is the kun-nukaasee, a capsize race in which crews deliberately overturn their boats, bail them out and race on—a test of the seamanship these communities live by. Smaller ceremonial races and rituals bracket the main heats.
Tickets & Access
Watching from the harbour is free and no ticket is needed. Facilities are modest and shade is limited, so come prepared for a hot, sunny day by the water. Check the local schedule in advance, as start times shift with the lunar date each year.
Tips for Visitors
Bring a hat, sunscreen and water for the exposed harbourside, and arrive early to find a good vantage point near the finish. Confirm the bus timetable for your return, as services thin out later in the day. Combine the visit with Itoman’s seafood market and southern Okinawa’s war memorial parks.
