Overview
Hakata Dontaku Minato Matsuri is one of Japan’s biggest Golden Week festivals, drawing around two million spectators to central Fukuoka each May. Ordinary citizens, companies and community groups form dancing troupes that parade down the main avenue, clapping wooden shamoji rice scoops in place of instruments. Its roots reach back some 800 years to a New Year procession called Matsubayashi, making it both a huge street party and a living tradition.
When & Where
In 2026 Dontaku is held on May 3 and 4, with an eve celebration on May 2. The main parade runs along Meiji-dori in the city centre, while dozens of open stages spread across downtown Fukuoka, Tenjin and Hakata. Nearest stations: Tenjin or Nakasu-Kawabata on the city subway.
Getting There
Fukuoka is exceptionally easy to reach: the city subway links Fukuoka Airport to Hakata and Tenjin in minutes, and the parade route along Meiji-dori is walkable from either Tenjin or Nakasu-Kawabata stations. Trains run frequently, but the centre is crowded over the holiday, so allow extra time and use an IC card to breeze through the gates.
What to Expect
Expect wave after wave of costumed dancing groups, from schoolchildren to company teams, many twirling the festival’s trademark rice scoops. Decorated floats known as hana jidosha roll through the streets, and the citywide stages host everything from folk dance to modern performances. Anyone can join the final everyone-dances finale, scoops and all.
Tickets & Access
The festival is free to watch, with no ticket required for the street parade or the open-air stages. Some grandstand seats along the main route may be sold or allocated in advance; otherwise viewing is first-come along the avenue. Food and drink stalls operate throughout the centre.
Tips for Visitors
Stake out a spot on Meiji-dori well before the parade starts, and bring water and sun protection for the long daytime route. Public transport beats driving during Golden Week. If you want to take part, look for the open participation segment where onlookers are invited to dance.
