Izumo Taisha Kamiari-sai 2026: When Japan’s Gods Gather in Shimane

While the rest of Japan calls it the “month without gods,” Izumo welcomes all eight million deities home for a week of solemn rites.

Overview

According to legend, every autumn Japan’s myriad Shinto gods leave their home shrines and gather at Izumo Taisha in Shimane — which is why the traditional name for the eleventh lunar month means “month without gods” everywhere except Izumo, where it becomes the “month with gods.” The Kamiari-sai marks their arrival with torch-lit welcoming ceremonies on the beach and solemn rituals within the grand shrine, where the deities are said to deliberate over human ties and relationships.

When & Where

In 2026 the festival opens on 29 November with the evening welcoming of the gods, followed by main ceremonies on 30 November, 4 December and 6 December. Venue: Izumo Taisha and nearby Inasa-no-hama beach, Izumo, Shimane.

Getting There

From Izumo Airport or JR Izumoshi Station, take the Ichibata Bus or the private Ichibata Railway toward Izumo Taisha-mae; the shrine is a short walk from there. Inasa-no-hama beach, site of the welcoming rite, is about 15 minutes on foot from the main shrine.

What to Expect

Expect a hushed, ceremonial atmosphere rather than a boisterous matsuri: the night-time welcoming of the gods at Inasa-no-hama, processions of priests, and rituals conducted largely out of public view. Izumo Taisha is also Japan’s foremost shrine for enmusubi (matchmaking), a fitting theme for the gathering.

Tickets & Access

Visiting the shrine grounds and watching the public portions of the ceremonies is free. Some rituals are conducted privately; check timings in advance, as the schedule follows the lunar calendar and shifts each year.
