Naha Great Tug-of-War 2026: Okinawa’s Guinness-Record Rope

Giant rope of the Naha Great Tug-of-War

OkinawaFestival

One of the largest tug-of-war contests in the world and a Guinness World Record holder, using a rope about 200 metres long and weighing some 40 tonnes.

Overview

At the Naha Great Tug-of-War, thousands of participants divide into East and West teams and heave an enormous rope, a ritual to pray for prosperity and good fortune. It is the centrepiece of the wider Naha Festival.

When and Where

The main tug-of-war takes place on Sunday, October 11, 2026, as part of a festival running October 10 to 12, on Route 58 at the Kumoji intersection in central Naha, Okinawa.

Getting There

Take the Yui Rail monorail to Kencho-mae Station, a short walk from the Kumoji intersection in the heart of Naha.

What to Expect

Before the pull, a lively parade fills Kokusai-dori with karate demonstrations, drums and firecrackers. Then the vast crowd heaves the giant rope; afterwards, people cut off pieces to keep as good-luck charms.

Tips for Visitors

Arrive early for a place near the rope, and be ready for warm, humid October weather in Okinawa. The performing-arts parade the day before makes a good warm-up to the main event.
