For three weeks each autumn, a kilometre of central Sapporo turns into an open-air canteen for the whole of Hokkaido — and in 2026 it runs from 11 September to 3 October.
Overview
Sapporo Autumn Fest (さっぽろオータムフェスト) is Hokkaido’s harvest showcase, staged along Odori Park in the middle of the city. It began in 2008 and now draws more than two million visitors a year across a cumulative 300 stalls. The premise is simple: producers, towns and restaurants from all over the prefecture bring their best food and drink to one strip of parkland, and you walk from block to block eating your way through it.
Unlike a shrine festival, there is no procession to catch and no fixed schedule to plan around. It is a grazing event — arrive hungry, pick a bench, and treat the twenty-three days as a rolling market rather than a single occasion.
When and Where
Dates: 11 September – 3 October 2026 (23 consecutive days).
Hours: 10:00–20:30 daily.
Venue: Odori Park, blocks Nishi 4 to Nishi 11, Chuo-ku, Sapporo.
Nearest station: Odori Station (subway Namboku, Tozai and Toho lines) — the park exits open directly onto the venue.
Getting There
From New Chitose Airport, take the JR Rapid Airport train to Sapporo Station, then ride one stop south on the Namboku subway line to Odori. Because the venue stretches roughly a kilometre, choose your entrance: use Odori Station exits for the Nishi 4 to Nishi 8 blocks, and Nishi-11-chome Station on the Tozai line for the Nishi 10 and 11 blocks at the far end. Exit 8 has a lift.
There is no event parking. The organiser asks visitors to come by subway or bus, and Sapporo’s subway runs frequently enough that this is genuinely the easier option.
What to Expect
Each block has its own identity rather than being one undifferentiated row of stalls:
- Nishi 4 — Tabearuki IN4 Square, the walk-and-eat block.
- Nishi 5 — EAT THE NORTH.
- Nishi 6 — Sapporo FOOD JAM.
- Nishi 7 — 7-chome BAR.
- Nishi 8 — Hokkaido Ichiba, a regional market where individual municipalities sell their own specialities and sake.
- Nishi 10 — Oniku Jutchome, given over entirely to Hokkaido meat.
- Nishi 11 — Beer City Sapporo, pairing city chefs with a beer terrace.
Tickets and Admission
Entry to every venue block is free. You pay per item at each stall, so budget by appetite rather than buying a ticket. Barrier-free information and a universal-design map are published on the official site.
Tips for Visitors
Split your visit by block. Nishi 8 is the place to find small-town producers you would otherwise have to drive across Hokkaido to meet; Nishi 10 and 11 are the meat-and-beer end. Walking the full kilometre in one go is a lot with a plate in hand.
Go on a weekday evening if you can. The event runs to 20:30, and the after-work crowd thins out again once commuters head home.
Dress for a Hokkaido autumn. Late September evenings in Sapporo get cold quickly once the sun drops, and the seating is outdoors.
