Illuminated Odori Park at the Sapporo White Illumination

HokkaidoIllumination

One of Japan’s earliest and best-known winter light displays, brightening central Sapporo every winter since 1981.

Overview

Odori Park fills with sparkling light sculptures of all sizes while the trees along Ekimae-dori and Minami 1-jo dori glitter with lights. It marks the start of Sapporo’s long, luminous winter season.

When and Where

The 2026–27 edition begins on November 20, 2026 and runs into mid-March 2027 (through March 14) at Odori Park and across downtown Sapporo, Hokkaido.

Getting There

Odori Station on the Sapporo subway opens directly onto Odori Park, and the venues are an easy walk from Sapporo Station.

What to Expect

Illuminated art objects fill Odori Park and the main avenues glow with tree lights. Around Christmas the lights stay on until midnight, making for a romantic late-night stroll.

Tips for Visitors

Dress for genuine cold and snow. Pair it with the German Christmas Market in Odori Park, and note that evenings are best. Later in winter the city also hosts the famous Sapporo Snow Festival.
