For one day, the bank tellers, the city hall staff and the ryokan front desks of a whole hot spring town all go to work in yukata.
Overview
Citizens’ Yukata Day (市民ゆかたデー) is not a festival with a stage and a crowd. It is a coordinated day on which public offices, shops, tourist facilities and inns across Kaminoyama City in Yamagata Prefecture carry out their ordinary work dressed in yukata.
Started in 2002, it grew out of Kaminoyama’s identity as an onsen town, where the yukata is everyday clothing rather than costume. Visitors who turn up in yukata are treated as participants and receive discounts and small services around town.
For a traveller this is an unusually low-effort way to join in: put on a yukata from your ryokan, walk into town, and the day works for you.
When and Where
The 2026 edition ran on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 July. There is no fixed start or end time — participation runs during each business’s normal opening hours.
It takes place across participating businesses throughout Kaminoyama City, centred on the Kaminoyama Onsen district. On the second day it pairs with “Smile Project Kaminoyama”, a summer event run by the Kaminoyama Junior Chamber with street stalls and festival games.
What to Expect
The participating businesses and the perks they offer are updated on a rolling basis, but the 2026 list gives a good sense of it.
- City Hall, the Kaminoyama Onsen Tourist Information Centre, the tourism association and the Kaminoyama branches of Yamagata Bank, Shonai Bank, Kirayaka Bank and Yamagata Shinkin Bank all worked in yukata.
- Participating ryokan included Senkeien Tsukioka Hotel, Kajitsu-no-Yama Azumaya, Arimakan, Hatago-no-Kokoro Hashimotoya and Hayamakan.
- Free tea was served at the Kaminoyama Castle Local Museum to yukata wearers.
- Lina World amusement park gave free entry (ride tickets charged separately), and the Saito Mokichi Memorial Museum gave free admission.
- Tanno Konnyaku offered a free tama-konnyaku skewer with purchases over 500 yen; Yamagata Wine Cave offered a free glass of wine.
Tickets and Admission
There is no admission fee and nothing to book. The offers apply to anyone wearing a yukata on the day.
Most participating ryokan lend yukata to guests, and shops in the onsen district sell them, so you do not need to arrive with one.
Tips for Visitors
- Stay overnight in the onsen district — your ryokan yukata is the ticket, and walking between the bathhouses is the point of the day.
- Pick up the current participating-business list at the Kaminoyama Onsen Tourist Information Centre when you arrive; it changes year to year.
- Yukata are worn left side over right. Getting it the other way round is how the dead are dressed, and locals will notice.
- Kaminoyama Castle and the samurai residence district are both walkable from the onsen area and photograph well in yukata.
