Overview
The Yamaguchi Tanabata Chochin Matsuri is a summer lantern festival with a history of roughly 600 years, counted among Japan’s largest. On the evenings of 6 and 7 August, tens of thousands of red chochin lanterns lit by real candles are strung along the streets and arcades of central Yamaguchi City, forming glowing corridors of light. A towering “lantern tree” hung with hundreds of lanterns anchors the display.

Getting There
The festival area is about 5 minutes on foot from JR Yamaguchi Station, or roughly 30 minutes by bus from the Sanyo Shinkansen stop at Shin-Yamaguchi. The core streets are pedestrian-friendly and best explored on foot after dark.
What to Expect
Expect a Chochin Yamakasa parade of lantern-decked floats, a lantern tree draped with around 800 lanterns, and a smaller “mini lantern tree” that families and visitors help light. The candle-lit glow — rather than electric bulbs — gives the whole festival a soft, traditional warmth.
Tickets & Access
Free to attend. The festivities are spread through public streets and arcades, so no ticket is required; simply arrive after sunset to see the lanterns at their best.
Tips for Visitors
Come at dusk to watch the lanterns being lit, and wear light clothing for the summer heat. Pair the evening with a daytime visit to the nearby Rurikoji Temple five-storey pagoda, one of Yamaguchi’s landmarks.
